Handpan is a musical instrument well-known for its beautiful melodies and calming tones. Due to their distinctive sound and fine craftsmanship, handpans must be carefully maintained to stay in outstanding condition.
Some customer may find the dirty spots on the handpan, which is hard to remove. That’s is because handpan is oxydic.
Why the handpan is oxydic?
1. Material Composition
Some handpans are made from stainless steel, which is more resistant but can still oxidize under certain conditions.
2. Moisture Exposure
Humidity: High humidity levels can lead to moisture accumulation on the surface, promoting oxidation.
Sweat and Oils: Natural oils and sweat from your hands can contribute to oxidation if the handpan is not cleaned regularly after use.
3. Environmental Factors
Air Quality: Pollutants and salt in the air (especially in coastal areas) can accelerate oxidation.
Temperature Fluctuations: Rapid changes in temperature can cause condensation, leading to moisture buildup.
4. Storage Conditions
Improper Storage: Storing the handpan in a damp or unventilated area can lead to oxidation. It’s important to keep it in a dry, stable environment.
5. Lack of Maintenance
Neglect: Failing to clean and oil the handpan regularly can allow oxidation to develop over time.
What shall we do if the handpan is oxydic?
Light surface oxidation maybe able to clean, you can try below ways:
1.Cleaning
Mild Cleaning Solution: Use a mixture of warm water and mild soap. Dampen a soft cloth and gently wipe the affected areas.
Baking Soda Paste: For more stubborn oxidation, create a paste with baking soda and water. Apply it to the oxidized areas, let it sit for a few minutes, and then gently scrub with a soft cloth.
Vinegar Solution: A diluted vinegar solution can also help. Apply it with a cloth, but be cautious and rinse thoroughly afterward to avoid any residue.
2. Drying
Thorough Drying: After cleaning, ensure the handpan is completely dry to prevent further oxidation. Use a dry microfiber cloth.
3. Oiling
Protective Layer: After cleaning and drying, apply a thin layer of mineral oil or a specialized handpan oil to protect the surface from moisture and future oxidation. Wipe off any excess oil.
The deeper oxidation is hard to clean. But we don’t like the spotted handpans, how can we do? Actually we can try to polish the oxydic handpan to a retro silver color.
How to polish the handpan?
Buy a sanding sponge online (1000-2000 grit) to polish the handpan slightly. You must be very careful, too heavy may cause the off tune of handpan.
How to maintain a handpan?
1.Clean
Regular Wiping: Use a soft, dry microfiber cloth to wipe down the surface after each use to remove fingerprints, moisture, and dust.
Deep Cleaning: Occasionally, you can clean the handpan with alcohol. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that can damage the surface.
Drying: Always ensure the handpan is completely dry before storing it.
2.Apply the protective oil
The purpose of the protective oil is to protect the Handpan metal by forming a film between the air and the metal, in order to prevent the process of oxidation-reduction. We recommend to use professional handpan protection oil, or the sewing machine oil.
3.Store the handpan in a suitable environment.
A handpan should be stored in a dry and stable temperature environment, and avoid chemicals, moisture and heat. Regular care can significantly reduce the risk of oxidation.
